Harbor Seal Diary

A small log about Lyova, the harbor seal who lives by the north pier.

Back on the flat rock

Low tide at seven. Lyova was already on the flat rock when I got there, belly up, ignoring two gulls that kept landing closer. He stayed for almost an hour, then slid off without a splash, the way he always does.

Fog day

Could barely see the end of the pier. Heard him before I saw him: that short snort when he surfaces. Counted eleven dives in twenty minutes. Fishing must be good under the fog.

The new scar

A thin pale line on his left side, already healing. Probably a rock, not a boat. The harbor master says he has seen the same thing on two other seals this summer.

First entry

I have been watching this seal every weekend since spring and finally decided to write things down. He is easy to recognize: dark spot over the right eye, and he never shares the rock.
